Though not that large, Killarney is the busiest tourist destination in southwest Ireland and therefore buzzes with activity, especially in the summer, when its lanes are packed with tourists browsing gift shops and frequenting its numerous pubs. Killarney House Gardens is a 5-acre oasis of peace in the centre of town. A frequent recipient of awards for its flora displays, Killarney is also surrounded by beautiful countryside and boasts numerous local attractions, such as the 26,000 acre National Park, the Lakes of Killarney, the Black Valley, the Torc Waterfall and Muckross House, with its 15th-century abbey ruins and massive yew tree.
